"You're so silly." Nomi's laugh was paper thin. "There's nothing weird going on between us."
Some of that grace she'd mentioned? Because everything was weird between them and he was the one making it that way. Case in point. They were standing in the hall having an argument stemming from the fact that she'd gone to see her brother. A totally rational, normal thing for her to do that Malone had transformed into a problem. Why? Solely to deflect from the fact that the moment he'd seen her, he'd developed a very hard-to-fight urge to pull her into his arms.
The more upset he made her, the less likely he'd be tempted to do it, right? As diversionary tactics went, that one was off the charts. Score one for Malone. Except now he felt like he'd been punched in the stomach.
Her hazel eyes were huge and shiny and laced with a million different emotions that he wished he could gather up with both hands. Examine them. Unlock their mysteries and determine exactly how each one worked.
Because they were all foreign.
He should have kept his mouth shut. But it was too late. He might as well lay it all out. "You know things changed after that kiss."
"Oh, yeah, right. That."
She laughed again, this time a little more brightly, but it was still just as false, likely because she had forgotten all about kissing him the other night in his kitchen. Must be nice. He got a repeat stuck in his head any time he set foot in the place.
Waving a hand airily, she continued, "What, you think there's something simmering between us because of one little kiss that barely registered on the Richter scale?"
"Barely registered?" Shut up. What was he doing opening that up for examination? Time for the only move open to himâspin this fiasco faster than a teacup in a tornado. "I mean, sure. That's one way to look at it."
"It's the only way to look at it." Her gaze darted back and forth between his shoulders and his chin as if she couldn't quite meet his eyes but didn't know where else to let her gaze rest. "Maybe there might have been a tiny bit of a spark, but you know, that's probably because we did things all out of order by getting married first. This is all just different. Neither of us is dating anyone. It's totally natural to get a little buzz, but we don't have to dwell on that."
A tiny spark? The same way the Nile was a rivulet of water maybe. Nice to know that had all been one sided. "Totally natural? That's why you were so quick to deny the whole idea of something simmering between us, huh?"
"Oh, well." Another laugh that sounded forced. "You know what? The problem is we're not practicing enough. That's really all we need to get around all of this. Just muddle through a few more kisses and everything will smooth out, especially our friendship."
"Hold up a minute. So your
